Agmatine (decarboxylated arginine) is an endogenous neuromodulator derived from the amino acid L-arginine by the enzyme arginine decarboxylase. Once considered a minor metabolite, agmatine is now recognized as a versatile signaling molecule with its own dedicated neuronal storage, release, and reuptake systems — qualifying it as a neurotransmitter. It modulates NMDA receptors (as an antagonist), imidazoline receptors (as an agonist), nitric oxide synthesis, and multiple neurotransmitter systems. Supplemental agmatine has demonstrated analgesic, neuroprotective, anxiolytic, antidepressant, and anti-addictive properties. It is increasingly popular in both the nootropic and bodybuilding communities for its cognitive benefits and nitric oxide modulation.
Harm Reduction
Standard supplemental dosing is 500 mg to 2.5 g daily, taken in divided doses. For nootropic/mood effects, 500-1000 mg daily is typical. For pain management, higher doses of 1-2.5 g may be needed. Sta...
